Antique German Dolls
When it comes to collecting dolls, some people think that they are all the same. But there is actually a lot of difference between collecting dolls. One of the biggest variations among dolls is where they were made. Back in the 19th century, doll making became a business instead of only a hobby.
Most of the antique dolls were made in Germany and France. The antique German dolls were more reproduced and sold then the French dolls because they were less expensive.

It was not only the whole dolls that were sold and traded, but also the individual parts of the doll. Usually, a doll maker would collect the parts and put them all together. The antique German dolls did not usually have as much design or detail as the French dolls, but were popular because they were more affordable.
There are also differences among antique dolls in the materials and finish of the dolls. China dolls are glazed and have more of a refined and polished look to them. Bisque dolls are not glazed and they have more of a natural looking finish. They are usually not as smooth or polished looking as the China dolls.
Collectors of antique German dolls have a lot of choices when it comes to what kind of doll they are going to collect and what style. Since the dolls were produced mainly between the 1860’s and 1940’s, there is quite a variation in the styles. Some of the dolls are baby dolls, some are young children and some are adult.
The styles of the adult dolls are usually relevant to the time period in which they were made. If the dolls had wigs, they were usually styled to mimic the current hair styles. If the dolls had molded hair, it too was styled close to the current trends.
The clothing of the dolls ranged from customs native to a nationality, or every day clothes. There were some dolls who only had molded clothes, while others had actual clothing.

The antique German dolls are a very popular collector’s item and are often sold or traded at live road shows or on the Internet. The value of a doll or collection of dolls varies greatly and a lot of the determined value is dependent on the condition of the doll and if it is a replication or authentic.
If the doll has been altered in some ways from its original form, it could be worth less than the dolls that are still in mint condition and have been minimally restored. If parts of the dolls have been replaced, it could also affect the authenticity and value as dolls that have all of the original parts can be worth a lot of money.
