Antique Bisque Dolls
Antique bisque dolls are one of the two main categories of porcelain dolls. The bisque style dolls tend to reflect a more natural skin tone and appearance. They are usually unglazed and have a more lackluster appearance then do the china dolls, which have glazed faces.
Some people prefer the look of the bisque dolls over the china dolls because they prefer to admire the pure beauty that exists with the more lifelike antique dolls.

The antique bisque dolls originated in the 1860’s and continued to be made in the 1940’s. They are typically smaller size dolls and had molded hairstyles. Some of the dolls did have molded bonnets or hats.
There were also dolls that were made with a molded bald head that had a tiny plate to insert a wig. Unlike the china porcelain dolls that were almost always produced fully clothed, some of the antique bisque dolls were made nude.
The bisque style dolls typically have less detail and accessories than the china porcelain dolls do. Some people prefer the natural look of the bisque dolls that is not glazed and is more in a pure form.
Others prefer the finished look of the glazed china dolls. Both certainly do have their own look and are beautiful. Most of the bisque dolls had molded clothing, stockings and boots. There were some however that donned clothing over the molded body.
The bisque dolls that came with wigs, typically had hairstyles that were representative of the particular era and culture that they were made in.
Most people who collect antique bisque dolls tend to collect by style or age of the doll. They range from dolls molded to look like babies to adults. Some have more of a moveable body type with parts and others are carved out of one piece of material and shaped to the mold of a body.

The majority of authentic antique bisque dolls have a rougher feel to the exterior, while some of the replicated dolls have a smooth appearance. True collectors know exactly what to look for in these dolls so that they know they are not going to get a fake.
Another aspect of the antique bisque dolls are the eyes. There are some that are stationary, while others have sleepy or flirty eyes. It is common for the eyes to have been replaced in some of the older antique dolls, which does not necessarily reduce the value of the doll, but is something that collectors should look at when they are at auction or looking to sell their dolls.
If the dolls have stationary eyes, it could be a tip that it is a replica instead of the original doll.
