One of the most common flaws and conditions with antique Barbie dolls is green ear. It may sound like a funny name, but it is very common with the dolls because the metal posts of the earrings over time turned the material of the ears green.

If they are older dolls like Ponytails and Bubble cuts, but in later model dolls it can virtually impossible to repair. If you do see the condition in the doll that you want to buy, make sure to ask for a reasonable discount.

Another condition that is common among antique Barbie dolls is greasy face. This condition only affects the dolls that are certain Ponytail and bubble cut Barbies. It is caused when the plasticizer leaks out of the doll’s face and can not be cured.

It is possible to remove some of the grease and powder the face but it will continue to be a problem and eventually lead to the removal of the facial makeup of the doll.

The condition of the limbs on antique Barbie dolls can be prone to breaking. Some of the dolls can lose limbs and if you do not have a reputable dealer, he may try to simply glue the parts back on so make sure that you check for movement and that legs are not going to fall off.

You should also carefully look at the makeup of the doll. It should have all of its face paintings still in the original form. This includes lips, blush, eyeliner, dots on the nose, eyebrows and nail polish. Although some fading or wearing of the paint is normal over time, it does deserve a discount of the price of the doll.

Another good thing to watch for in antique Barbie dolls is if the dolls are still in their original clothing and boxes. It is a good idea to research what the doll should be wearing and what the box looks like so that you are able to spot a fraud or altered doll.
